Abstract

Twenty one New Zealand male rabbits weighing 2-2.5 kg and 3 months old were classified into three main groups. The control group did not receive any treatment n=3 rabbits). The rest of animals (n=18 rabbits), corneal epithelium was injured by 23 syringe needle and blade 15 and was divided into: (A) Normal healing group which was divided into three subgroups (n=3 rabbits each) and the animals were left for normal healing for 1 day,1 week and 4 weeks respectively , (B) Laser treated group which was divided into three subgroups (n=3 rabbits each) and subjected to anterior stromal puncture using Q-switched Nd:YAG laser on corneal sub-epithelium or superficial stroma and the animals were left for 1 day, 1 week and 4 weeks respectively. After the demonstrated period, rabbits were sacrificed, eyes were enucleated and the corneas were isolated for the following measurements: corneal protein content, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDSPAGE) for corneal protein, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidative capacity TOC), oxidative stress index (OSI) and histological examination for corneal tissues by light microscope and transmission electron microscope. The present results of corneal total protein and sodium dodecyle sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis indicated better improvement in corneal protein in Q-switched Nd:YAG laser treated groups than normal healing groups. Moreover after four weeks the oxidative stress index in laser treated corneas showed pronounced balance between antioxidant capacity and oxidative capacity. In both normal healing and the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser treated rabbits, the light microscopic examination and the transmission electron microscope showed improvement of corneal tissues after one and four weeks. After four weeks of treatment of rabbit cornea with Q-switched Nd:YAG laser the Bowman’s membrane became regular, the basement membrane reformation was almost intact by four weeks and no areas of reduplication were found 3 Abstract Q switched Nd:YAG laser was performed to four eyes of four patients with recurrent corneal erosions at National institute of laser enhanced science, Cairo University , Egypt. All patients had unilateral corneal erosions and a history of recurrence after conservative management with topical lubricants, patching or therapeutic contact lenses.Three eyes had a healed corneal epithelium with no recurrence of corneal erosion. The fourth eye had a recurrence attack after healing and was given conservative treatment as topical antibiotic and topical lubricants No adverse reactions such as corneal haze, corneal decompensation, cataract inflammation, transient eye pressure elevation and visual loss.
