Research Summary
”Suggested exercises from Egyptian songs to improve the performance on The Nay instrument”
Introduction:
The nay is an ancient instrument of the eastern Takht instruments that has moved through the different civilizations such as the ancient Egyptian , the Babylon , the Ashurian , the Persian , the ancient Greece and the ancient Rome then the Pre-Islamic age , the Islam beginning , the Umayyed , the Abbasian age , the Andalusian age , the Fatimide age and the other civilizations until it has got to what it is now in our current time.
Several authors were interested in this instrument and composed special works to show its facilities and the playing skill on it , The nay instrument is one of the non-fixed tones Woodwind Instruments that represents the difficulty for the student in terms of outputting the correct audio from it because of the difficulty in controlling the suitable angle to put the instrument on the lips of the student , in addition to the difficulty of performing the true tones on it , In addition to the difficulty of organizing the nay, The student’s breath and outputting it in a true way and putting the fingers over the holes tightly so as not to leak the air from it in order not to form the required tones and also the difficulty of performing some musical leaps .
This study includes five chapters reviewed by the researcher as follows:

The search problem:
As the researcher teaches the nay instrument at the Faculty of Specific Education, Ain Shams University, she finds that there are playing and technical difficulties which faced the nay students, as the nay is non-fixed tones instrument and needs certain positions and different types of Puffs in playing the nay, and also there are a difficulty in the tones playing correctly and a difficulty in the melodic leaps, the musical rests, the melodic ligatures and the time ligatures. So the researcher felt that it could be used a set of simple songs for some composers and composed some exercises inspired from them, to train the students how to perform the tones correctly as those songs very popular and contribute in raising the level of the performance of the second year nay students at the Faculty of Specific Education - Ain Shams University.
Research objectives:
1. Identifying some technical difficulties which faced the student when playing the nay instrument.
2. Overcoming these difficulties through the suggested trainings of the Egyptian songs for some composers.
3. Improving the student’s performance on the nay instrument through the suggested trainings of the Egyptian songs for some composers.
The research Importance:
This research may contribute in raising the level of the student’s performance in playing the nay instrument and improves their playing skills through the inspired exercises of the Egyptian songs for some composers.
4. The research questions:
1. What are the technical difficulties facing the student when playing the nay instrument.
2. What is the possibility to overcome the technical difficulties by using the Egyptian songs for some composers?
3. What are the suggested trainings and the playing instructions that contribute to improving the performance on the nay instrument.
The research limits:
A group of the audible Egyptian songs for some composers in the second half of the twentieth century which are suitable to the level of the nay students at second year by using the dokah nay and the nawa nay.
The research procedures:
1. The research Methodology:
This study used the descriptive analytical method.
2- The research sample :
A group of Egyptian songs for some composers that contain simple tones and audible for the student.
3- The research tools:
- CDs for a group of the Egyptian songs for some composers.
- The experts and the specified professors’ opinions form about the selected sample from the Egyptian songs in the second half from the twentieth century for some composers.
This chapter ended by the terms.
Chapter two (The Theoretical Structure):
It consists of two sections:
The first topic (The nay instrument and its development in different civilizations) include:
The definition of the nay instrument and its development stages through the civilizations and the way of playing on it, and the famous performers of the nay instrument, and the famous composed songs for the nay instrument.
The second topic (The Egyptian song in the second half of the twentieth century) Divided into:
The first axis: The Egyptian song in the third quarter of the twentieth century (1950 – 1975).
The second axis: The Egyptian song in the fourth quarter of the twentieth century (1975 – 2000).
Chapter Three (The Previous Studies and researches related to the research):
This chapter includes the previous studies and it is divided into two sections:
Section one: the previous studies which are related to the research subject.
Section two: the previous studies which related to the Egyptian song.
Chapter four (The Implementation Structure):
It consists of two sections:
The first section: consists of the suggested trainings of the researcher innovation inspired by the Egyptian songs on the nay Aldokah at makamat (Beattie - kord - Saba - Hijaz) and set the objective of each exercise.
The second section: consists of the suggested trainings of the researcher innovation inspired by the Egyptian songs on the nay nawa at makamat (Rast on Jahargah - Piatti on nawa - Saba on naw) and set the objective of each exercise.
Chapter five (Research Results And the proposed Recommendations):
It includes the results reached by the study and the suggested recommendations, the research ends with a list of the Arab and the Foreign references then a list of the supplements and the research summary in Arabic and English.
