Abstract

This study aimed at improving the quality of maternal health care services in El Fayoum and Beni Suef governorates through the implementation of a health education program for nurses and counseling for physicians in 10 health care centers in both governorates. An observational checklist was used to assess nurses’ performance and to monitor the quality of the provided antenatal and postnatal care. Assessing nurses’ performance was followed by measuring clients’ satisfaction for the quality of maternal care that is provided after intervention through a designed questionnaire.
Analysis of the checklist for the nurses’ performance during antenatal care for the newly comer pregnant women showed that the overall performance of nurses improved from 32% before the health education intervention program to 65% after the intervention. Regarding antenatal care during the third trimester, the overall nurses’ performance improved from 33.5% before the intervention to 65.1% after intervention. Moreover, analysis of the checklist for the postpartum care showed an improvement in the overall nurses’ performance (35.8% before the intervention versus 60% after the intervention).
After the checklist analysis proved there is an overall improvement in nurses’ performance, a questionnaire was used to assess clients’ satisfaction for the quality of maternal care provided after the intervention. Our results showed a higher number of visits among pregnant women attending the centers receiving the health education intervention program (62.2% had 3 visits or more) compared to the centers not receiving the health education intervention program (36.4% had 3 visits or more). Our results also revealed a higher percentage of satisfaction about health education among clients who attended centers receiving the health education intervention program (95%) compared to 24.3% among clients who attended centers not receiving the intervention with a significant statistical difference. In addition, our results showed that majority of the studied clients attending centers receiving the health education intervention program reported overall satisfaction of the antenatal services in the center (96%) compared to 22.1% in centers not receiving the intervention with a significant statistical difference. Moreover, 88.7% of the clients would use the antenatal care services in the centers receiving the health education intervention in the next pregnancy compared to 42.9% in centers not receiving the intervention with a significant statistical difference. Our study also revealed that the majority of clients who attended the health care centers receiving the intervention would recommend the center to others (95.1%) while only 42.9% of subjects attending the centers without intervention would recommend them to others with a significant statistical difference.
