Abstract As the life expectancy of older adults continues to increase, prevention or postponement of age-associated mobility-disability is now of major public health importance. Elders who lose their mobility have higher rates of falls and injury, chronic disease, dependency, institutionalization, and mortality .Consequently, the need to identify specific factors that influence mobility-disability has become increasingly important for optimizing appropriate intervention strategies. The aim of the current study is to assess the relationship between physical performance, muscle mass and muscle strength among community dwelling elderly subjects. All participants were recruited and interviewed randomly at the outpatient clinic of the geriatric medicine department in Ain Shams University hospital. All participants were subjected to Personal history, full medical history, Clinical medical examination, Mental status assessment using MMSE, Assessment of activity daily living (ADL) and instrumental activity daily living, muscle mass was assessed by DXA, muscle strength was measured by hand grip strength using a Jamar hydraulic hand dynamometer and The current study showed that subjects with impaired physical performance had lower muscle strength and sarcopenia with no significant difference between the cases and control group regarding muscle mass. The study found that muscle strength and age were a significant independent predictor of gait speed among elderly. There was a significant inverse relation between the duration of gait speed in seconds and muscle strength and height The study also found that females with impaired physical performance were shorter and had lower muscle strength than their controls. Both weight & height were higher among controls than cases and illiteracy &number of co-morbidities were higher among cases than controls. The current study showed that co-morbidities that significantly affect the gait speed were knee arthritis and cervical spondyolosis as they were more among case group. |
