Abstract

A prospective observational study was done on 850 pregnant patients who were regularly attending the out patient clinic for routine antenatal care at suez canal university hospital from March 2011 to March 2012.
The aim of the study was to determine whether uric acid level in the first trimester of pregnancy can be used as a predictor of subsequent development of GDM or not.
Maternal serum uric acid was measured between 10-13 weeks gestation through a venous blood sample which was withdrawn from women after 4h fasting. Then all patients underwent routine GDM screening with 50gm oral glucose-loading test (GLT) between 24-28 weeks gestation. When blood glucose level after 1hr was >140mg/dl, the patient was considered to be at increased risk for developing GDM and underwent 3hrs oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
