Abstract

Maternal death is a great social tragedy. It is the main yardstick by which maternity services of a country can be accurately judged .
Maternal Mortality is one of the widest health disparities between rich and developing countries . The study of maternal mortality is important in evaluating the quality of obstetric services , Training clinicians who care for pregnant women and improving the safety of childbearing .
The committee on maternal mortality of International federation of gynaecologists and obstetricians , defines maternal death as the death of any woman dying of any cause while pregnant or within 42 day of terminates of pregnancy irrespective of the duration and site of pregnancy
On the Other hand , the American medical Association (AMA) and most states use a 90 day limit instead of a 42 day , while . maternal mortality collaborative of the American college of obstetricians and Gynaecologists
considered deaths occurring up to one year after termination of pregnancy as maternal .
• The Maternal mortality Rate is defined as the number of maternal deaths per 100.000 women of the -reproductive age 15— 49 years , while the maternal mortality Ratio is defined as number of maternal deaths per 100.000 live births .
The WHO, estimates that about 500.000 women die each year because of conditions related to pregnancy and childbirth . Almost 99% of theredeaths took place in developing countries where MM was as much as 100 200 times higher.
Maternal mortality ratios range widely from an estimated 12 MD per 100.000 births in North America to more than 700 per 100.000 births in 3ame parts of Sub - Saharan Africa , and to 1110 per 100.000 births in Ghana
for the developing world as a whole , MMR is estimated at more than 400 deaths per 100.000 live births , while the ratio is below 30 per 100.000 births
Unfortunately , in developing countries , national statistics are high by inaccurate and hospital confinement was not universal .
• No study on MM was conducted in Suez during the past 5 years .my study was conducted retrospectively during 1990 to 1994 in Suez governorate where all deaths of women in the reproductive age were identified and investigated through the work of this, study .
•The causes of maternal mortality can be classified into :. l/ Direct obstetric causes :. which result from complications of pregnancy , puerperium or its mangement.
2/ Indirect obstetrical causes , which result from pre - existing medical conditions that are exacerbated by pregnancy ,
3/ Incidental causes :. which result from disorders incidental to and out aggravated by pregnancy such as homicide
