Abstract

This study was carried out during 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 seasons to investigate the effect of different substrates and its mixtures, spawn ratio, container types, on oyster mushroom fruit bodies yield and its quality as well as the effect of storage temperature on fruit bodies quality during storage period. This work was done in private mushroom Laboratory, at Zagazig City, El Sharkia Governorate, Egypt. The maximum yield of fruit bodies per bag, number of fruit bodies per bag and biological efficiency (B.E) were obtained from cultivation of mushroom on sole rice straw substrate or rice straw in mixtures with wheat straw. While sugarcane bagasse substrate recorded the lowest values in this
respect.Using 5% spawn ratio gave the highest total yield per bag
and biological efficiency, in general and in particular when
oyster mushroom grown on rice straw substrate. Further increase
in spawn ratio (7.5% and 10%) did not show significant increase
in mushroom yield.Total mushroom fruit bodies yield was at its maximum
value by using transparent polyethylene bags, while polyvinylchloride bottles gave the highest number of fruit bodies xii per kg substrate. In addition, both polyethylene bags and polypropylene boxes recorded the highest early yield per kg substrate with no significant difference between them.Fruit bodies weight loss recorded the lowest values when it
stored at 4°C±1°C compared to that stored at 16°C±2°C for 12
days from storage.
