This study tackles the theme: Collocations in the language of the contemporary Press in 2009-2010
The study traces collocations in contemporary Arabic language, and classifies them
chronologically ordered in semantic fields, so their relation with others gets clear. It also
analyzes them in terms of structure and significance by identificating the meaning of such
collocations in their linguistic context. The study also identifies the semantic development
undergone by these collocations according to what is known in semantics as laws of significance,
known as particularization, generalization, alteration, inferiority and sophistication.
The study analyzes a variety of Journalese material (News – Investigations - Reports - Articles) of
five daily Arab newspapers representing different trends reflected in its use of the language, they
are:
1. Al-Ahram newspaper (Egyptian nationalist).
2. Al Masry Al Yom (Egyptian independent opposition)
3. Asharq Alawsat (Arabic, published in London)
4. Ar-rai (Jordanian independent)
5. Emirates News Agency
Over 2009-2010. The language of the press is almost the most widely and most able to interact with
the public and influence them and the contemporary Arabic language.
The study aims to achieve several objectives, including:
1- Supporting studies of collocations because of the need for Arabic monolingual dictionary that
serves native, non-native speakers and translators.
6
2- To define and characterize collocations, and remove the ambiguity and overlap between them and
other structures such as idioms and compound nouns and proverbs.
3- Revealing collocations borrowed from other languages, which entered Arabic through translation,
especially in journalistic style. Such as: to play a role - blind imitation - To draw up a policy.
4- Disclosure of the semantic relations between collocations such as synonymy and contrast and
verbal participation.
As for the methodology pursued in the study, it is the descriptive - analytical approach. It begins
as descriptive, by describing collocations in a specified period of time in the Arab press
(2009-2010), and then proceeds to the analytical study that analyzes the components and classifies
them in their semantic fields. The study also resorts to a statistical approach.
The study falls into an introduction and a preface, and two parts. Each part includes a number of
chapters, which in turn include collocations in alphabetical order according to the ”Nodal Word”,
to facilitate the search. Then the study closes with the conclusion.
