Abstract

Acute poisoning in children is still a major public health problem, and represents a frequent cause of admission in emergency.
A cross sectional study was carried out on 81 children presented to the toxicology department, Mansoura General hospital with history of accidental poisoning during the period from December 2010 to December 2011, Study data showed that accidental poisoning among studied group has high prevalence in males 49(60.5%).The most common age group was from 1 year to 5years 76(83%). The low socio economic group has high prevalence50 (61.7%).
The most common toxic substances were household products involved 29 cases (35.8%), then drugs including 22cases (27.2%), Insecticides involving 16 cases (19.7%) involving 10 cases organophosphorus poisoning, Petrolieum products poisoning comes to the fourth order of the list including 6cases (7.4%), Then the chemicals poisoning comes including 4cases (4.9%), At last other toxins as mushroom plants involving 2cases (2.5%) has been found in the study.
Nations have to stop this phenomenon especially in developing countries where overcrowded families and lack of supervision on children with availability of household products and drugs at reach of children.
All household products and drugs should be kept out of reach of children.
