Abstract

Technical progress of the 21st century to a large degree is connected with creation and widest applications of composite materials on the basis of glass, carbon, ceramic, silicate and chemical fibers. At the same time, production of such materials produces negative effect on natural environment and human health. For this reason, many countries prohibited production and use of asbestos fabrications and building materials on the basis of metallurgical slags. The most applicable resource for obtaining a new class of fibers with unique properties proved natural rocks which have no any health hazard or negative impact on natural environment So, this study investigated the manufacturing process of basalt fibers and improved the applicability of such fibers as a thermal insulation, acoustic absorption and fire resistance material. Also, this study investigated newly formulated non-asbestos brake pad based on different contents of basalt fibers with the required technical properties according to the Egyptian Standards for brake lining and pads for automobiles (ES: 1981/2007). These newly formulated brake pads have been tested under Friction Assessment and Screening Test (FAST). Friction coefficient, wear rate and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for friction surfaces were examined to assess the performance of these samples. Although the optimum process parameters are still under investigation, however, it in various industrial applications based on the obtained results.
