Abstract

Wastewater from Cairo Oil Refining Company (CORC) has the characteristics of high concentration of aromatic
petroleum hydrocarbons, especially phenols, naphthalene (NAP), anthracene (ANT), and pyrene (PYR). Using microwave (MW) as advanced oxidation process (AOP) treatment showed that the MW output power and irradiation time has a significant positive effect on the removal efficiency.
Batch adsorption studies were carried out using rice straw, (RS), and sugarcane bagasse (SB) under varying experimental conditions of contact time, initial aromatic pollutants (phenols and PAHs) concentration and operational temperature. The adsorption data were better described by Langmuir isotherm model. The calculated heat of adsorption indicated that the biosorption process is a chemical adsorption and has an endothermic nature.
The hybrid treatment system of MW/H2O2 followed by biosorption onto mixed RS/SB adsorbent was applied on actual petroleum refinery wastewater (PRWW) collected from CORC. The removal efficiencies were enhanced at all studied operation conditions than each treatment processes individually.
Key Words: Refinery Wastewater, Microwave, advanced oxidation process, biosorption, equilibrium isotherm.
