Abstract

This study was conducted to measure health related quality of life of a sample of early stage female breast cancer patients and to identify factors affecting their QOL.
Early stage breast cancer patients were recruited from outpatient clinic at department of oncology and nuclear medicine at Ain Shams University Hospital.
In this study 64 female breast cancer patients participated, their age was ranging between 28 and 68 years with a mean of 51years. Their educational level varied between illiterate to highly educated and most of the patients were housewives.
Physical domainwas the most affected domain for breast cancer patients in this study and functional domain was the least affected domain.
Socio-demographic factors that significantly affected QOL scores for breast cancer patients were patient age, education, having children and family income.
As regard the effect of specific patient characteristics Presence of caregiver was the factor that affected different QOL scores.
Age at diagnosis, affection of the side of the predominant hand, postoperative chemotherapy and presence of difficulty in obtaining the medication were the disease related factors that affected QOL scores for early stage breast cancer patients.
The final model predicting QOL for early stage female breast cancer patients included age of the patients, education and presence of difficulty in obtaining the medicationas determinants for total QOL score
