Abstract

Background: Abnormal uterine bleeding is one of the commonest manifestations of female patients with gynaecological problems. Endometrial lesions are considered one of the debilitating etiologies and common causes of failure of blind medical treatment.Patients and methods: The study was carried out on 30 female patients with AUB during the period from April 2013 to April 2014. They were referred to the radiology department of Zagazig university hospitals. All patients presented with abnormal uterine bleeding and their age ranged between 26- 70 years. All patients were subjected to: Full history takening, general examination, laboratory investigation and 2D transvaginal ultrasonograghy, Doppler study of the uterine arteries using the terms of IETA, biopsy and the results were correlated to the histopathological picture of the endometrium. Results: The age ranged between 26 and 70 years with a mean of 49.3 years. They had a mean parity of 2.5. The most common endometrial histopathology was hyperplasia (13 cases, 43.3%) followed by endometrial polyps (7 cases, 23.3 %), 5 cases of endometrial carcinoma (16.7 %), 3 case of atrophic endometrium (10%) then disordered proliferative endometrium (2 cases, 6.7%).Regarding the value of IETA criteria in assessment of endometrial lesions there was significant difference between benign and malignant endometrial lesions in the following criteria: endometrial thickness color floe score, vascular pattern, endo-myometrial junction, endometrial midline, echogenic pattern. However; presence of intracavitary fluid and synechiae were found to have non-significant value. Keywords: Transvaginal ultrasound, endometrial lesions, IETA criteria, Abnormal uterine bleeding.
