Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of (1) Different doses
of ionizing radiation, (2) Time of Storage on the microleakage of two
different types of glass ionomer ; conventional and resin modified. Class V
cavity preparations were performed in forty bovine incisors and restored
using glass ionomer restorative material.
Samples were randomly divided into two main groups according to
the type of glass ionomer used to 1) conventional 2) resin modified. Both
groups were further subdivided into four subgroups according to irradiation
dose to; zero Gray, 10 Gray, 30 Gray, & 60 Gray. Each group was measured
for microleakage at three time intervals 3 weeks, 6 weeks and 12weeks after
the end of irradiation exposure.
Microleakage testing was performed using fluid filtration device.
Furthermore, a sample of each group was micro-graphed using scanning
electron microscopy. Values of microleakage in μl/min/20psi were collected,
tubulated and statistically analyzed.
Results showed that the different irradiation dose affects the
microleakage of glass ionomer as there was statistically significant increase
in microleakage between control and 10 Gy groups and 30 gray and 60 gray
groups.
