Abstract

The botulinum toxin was the first bacterial toxin used as a medicine. It has become a versatile drug in various fields of medicine. Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin which selectively inhibits cholinergic neurotransmission. This property has lead to use the botulinum toxin in the clinical management of conditions as diverse as spasticity, gustatory sweating (Frey’s syndrome), hyperhidrosis and cosmetic surgery. Application of botulinum toxin A has been shown to be effective in the treatment of hypersalivation accompanying various diseases.
