Abstract

1. A total number of 1856, farm animals in Egypt were
entomologically examined seasonally during the year 1987
for common skin parasites.
2. Out of 767 examined cattle, 285 (37.1\) were infested
with Boophilus annulatus ticks, while out of 649
buffaloes, 36 (5.5\) were infested with the same
ectoparasite, in addition 378 (58.2\) were parasitized
by Psoroptes natalensis mites; as well as 522 (80.4\)
were attacked by Haematopinus tuberculatus blood
sucking lice and out of 440 sheep, 226 (51.3\) were
infested with Psoroptes ~ mites.
3. Seasonal incidence of tick infestation has undergone
variation, the highest incidence was observed during
summer while the lowest one was noticed in winter.
4. Tick index and \ of infestation go hand by hand and
the average tick load/cattle was more than in
buffaloes.
5. The most preferable sites for infested ticks were in
this arrangement, neck, dewlap, under the tail and
thighs in both species of animals.
6. Seasonal incidence of mites infestation has undergone
variation, higher incidence was observed during winter
and lower one was in summer season in both buffaloes
and sheep.
7. The predilection sites for mange mites were arranged
as, withers, back, lumbar, croup and under the tail
regions in buffaloes while in sheep were ears, nose,
forehead and eye lids.
8. Lice infestation in buffaloes has undergone seasonal variation,
highest incidence was observed during winter and
lowest one was noticed in summer.
9. The predilection sites for lice were, neck, shoulders
and chest in buffaloes.
10. The prevailing temperature as well as the hygienic
conditions and to some extent relative humidity under
which farm aniaals are kept, play an important role in
incidence of skin parasites infestation.
