Abstract

The present investigation was carried out on 512 animals with a clinical picture o~ lumpy skin disease during 1988 at El Suez, El Tal El Kebeer and El NoOa~ia. All ages groups, both sexes and breeds o~ cattle are suscea tible to lumpy skin disease. - The morbidity rate ranged ~rom 8.8% to 46.6 % and the mortality rate was ~rom 0 - 2%.The clinical ~indings were pyrexia (4loC) which lasted 9 -21 days, inappetance, salivatlon, lacrimation and nasal dicharge, accompanled by generalized eruption o~ intradermal skin nodules scattered all over the skin. Occasionally the nodules ~ound on mucous membrane o~ the eyes. The nooules varied in numbers and its Size was ranged ~rom 0.5 to 5 cm in diameter. Some animals showed Edema o~ the limbs and ventral aspect o~ the abdomen as well as swelling o~ the prescapular ana pre~emoral lymph glands. Post-mortem examination o~ two dead animals revealed skin nodules (0.5 5 cm) in Olameter lnvolvlng all layers o~ the skin. With or with out ~morrnagic spots below then. Congestion To the upper respira~IY tract wlth emphyzematous areas on the lungs. The g~strO-int~inal tract. the spleen. lymph nooes, liver and the kldney ~ also congested. Swelling and congestion To the &UperTicial~Ph glands were observed. Histopathologlcal Tindings revealed the presence o~ lntrac ytoplasmic inclusion bodies in epithelial cells o~ the skin nodules, degenerative changes in the epidermis and oedematous in Tilteration in epithelial connectlve tissue. Haematological studies revelaed that the total erythrocytlc count and PCV showed a signi~lcant DROP in Olseaseo animals than apparently healthy ones. While the haemoglobln content and total leucocytic count showed no signi~lcant diTTerence between both the diseased and apparently healthy animals. Serum biochemical analysis showed increased in serum glutamlc oxaloacetic and glutamlc pyruvIc transanimases while serum alkaline phosphatase reported a signiTicant decreased activity. Serum electrophoretogram o~ dlseased cows recorded marked alteration in its Tractions and subTractIons, the albumen and beta-globuline percenta~ are SlgnlTicantly dropped while alpha and gamma-globulIn perc”tages are signiTicantly elevated.
