Abstract Nowadays wound infection is one of the most challenging aspects of wound management. It is a major contributor to healthcare costs around the world, and causes significant distress to patients and carers. The aim of the study is to assess nurse’s performance regarding infection control measures in caring for patient with post operative wound. The study was conducted in four general hospitals in Port-Said City. The sample comprised 50 nurses working in surgical units and out-patient surgical clinics. The tools for data collection were: a structured ”questionnaire sheet” to assess nurses’ level of knowledge and ”observational checklists” to assess nurses’ level of practice when caring for the patient with post operative wound. Results showed unsatisfactory level of performance among nurses’, related to post operative wounds care. The study concluded that there is a negative relation between nurses’ total score of knowledge and total score of practice related to post operative wound care. The study recommended improving nurses’ performance regarding postoperative wound care through applying infection control measures and monitoring periodically the nurses’ performance. |
