Abstract

The aim of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of a program based on transactional strategies instruction in developing EFL reading comprehension skills of secondary stage students. The problem of this study was identified in first year secondary stage students’ poor level in literal, inferential and critical reading comprehension skills. The study adopted the quasi- experimental design. The subjects of this study were (46) female participants who were selected at random from 6th October secondary school for girls at Port Said. They were divided into two groups (control and experimental). To determine the most required literal, inferential and critical reading comprehension skills to be developed throughout the program, a questionnaire containing a list of reading comprehension skills on the three levels was designed for TEFL specialists. Based on the selected skills, the researcher designed a pre- post reading comprehension skills test approved by jury, and a ten sessions program based on transactional strategies instruction was developed. The results of administering the pre- post reading comprehension skills test showed that there is statistically significant difference at 0.0001 level between the mean scores of the control and experimental groups on the post- test in favor of the former in overall reading comprehension as well as in each reading comprehension level separately. The findings of the present study revealed that a transactional strategies instruction based program has a positive effect on developing secondary stage students’ reading comprehension skills. Therefore, it is recommended that the proposed program can be adopted by teachers for developing EFL reading comprehension skills and strategic reading comprehension instruction at secondary stage and also other stages.
