Abstract

The present study was carried out on 230 Oreochromis niloticus randomly collected alive from private freshwater fish farms at Eltal Elkbir- Sharkia governorate. The fish were subjected to clinical, postmortem and parasitological examination. The efficacy of Bio-Mos® as a biocontrol agent was evaluated on growth performance, hematological parameters, total proteins content and the Serum Lysozyme activity, as well as its role in the treatment of the infected fish and prophylaxis of non-infected fish from external parasitic infection. The isolated parasites were subjected to identification and appeared to be belonging to the protozoa of genera Trichodina, Epistylis and Chilodonella, as well as monogenea of genera Cichlidogyrus and Ancyrocephalus. The results proved that Bio-Mos® has positive effect on growth performance as manifested by significant increase in the weight and weight gain when given in 2g/Kg and 4g/Kg feed. As a therapeutic agent for external parasites, Bio-Mos® in both concentrations 2 and 4 g/Kg feed was able to eradicate the Trichodina and Epistylis completely but had no effect on Chilodonella and Monogena infection. The efficacy of Bio-Mos® as a prophylactic agent against the external parasites was not sufficient to protect the fish against the infection with external parasites as proved in the experimental challenge.
