Abstract

Choosing the best site of a sewer lift station is considered one of the complex unstructured decisions in the decision making process. It involves consideration and analysis of various data and criteria. Site selection is the process of finding the best location that meets desired conditions set by the selection criteria. This thesis explores the selection of the best site of a lift station for the industrial sewer system for the city of El-Mahalla El-Kubra using Geographic Information System (GIS) with Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM).
The use of GIS would be of great important because of the spatial nature of the problem. To determine the best site there will be a need to use MCDM. So, integrating GIS with MCDM would be the best solution to solve this problem.
A GIS-based on MCDM model will be built to create a suitability map for a lift station for the sewer network in the city of El-Mahalla El-Kubra based on multiple criteria. To accomplish this, spatial data of the study area were collected and four criteria factor and two constraint criteria were determined to identify the best sites for the lift station. The MCDM technique used is the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) for calculating the weight of the criteria. AHP depends on the planner’s expertise but this expertise can’t be an exact measurement, so fuzzy theory was integrated to AHP in calculating the criteria weights and that was applied in a developed tool to calculate weights. After integrating both GIS and MCDM, suitability map will be extracted that map will be compared to the proposed sites of the lift station and then these sites are ranked according to their suitability for building the lift station.
