Abstract

This study presents a solution, using the conformal mapping technique, for the problem of seepage underneath two consecutive DROP structures with intermediate fIlter between them. The two structures are founded on a homogeneous isotropic pervious bed extending to infInity in the upstream, downstream, and vertically downward directions. Each of the two structures has two flat aprons in the upstream and downstream sides and a slopping middle apron between them.
Formulae are derived for calculating the relative uplift pressures acting on both the upstream and downstream structures. Also Formulae are derived to calculate the exit gradient along the intermediate filter and the downstream bed, as well as the seepage discharge. For a case study, the seepage characteristics are calculated twice: using the derived formulae from the proposed analytical model, and using the well known two¬dimensional finite element, steady state flow model (SEEP2D-GMS). Verification of results shows a very good agreement between them.
The derived formulas are used to calculate the seepage characteristics for a wide range of eight different relative structure dimensions. Parametric analyses are carried out to indicate the effect of change in each of the studied parameters on the seepage characteristics.
Summary and conclusions of the study are also presented.•
