Abstract

This thesis presents an active power filter technology that aims at improving power quality. Active power filter can be defined as a new power electronic device that may be connected in shunt or series connection with a group of non-linear loads to improve power factor, eliminate harmonics and compensate for load unbalancing. This study focuses on shunt active filter configuration with a control strategy over it.
The thesis also presents a simulation analysis based on SIMULINK toolbox provided by MATLAB software package for shunt active power filter using synchronous reference frame method connected to a three-phase four wire system.
Moreover, a practical implementation of a shunt active power filter using microcontroller has been designed and tested.
The practical implementation includes the necessary microcontroller hardware interface circuits and firmware.
The hardware design consists of the following modules:
1- Signal measurement modules.
2- Anti-aliasing filters modules.
3- Processing Board for digital signal.
4- Subtraction module.
5- Hysteresis current control module.
6- IGBT driver and inverter module.
All software is based on ANSIC and assembly programming language for PIC18F452 microcontroller. A variety of practical results are obtained, analyzed and discussed to support the validity of the theoretical ideas introduced in this research.
Finally, the study presents a conclusion section summarizing the simulation and the practical results obtained within the study, with some topics being suggested for further research work.
