Abstract

Objectives: To calculate the prevalence and severity of depression among elderly. And to identify the associated risk factors.
Design: a cross-sectional study.
Setting: The elderly social club of Zagazig, and the elderly social club of El-Hokama.
Participants: 290 subjects aged ≥ 60 years.
Results: The prevalence of depression was 46.6%, 75.6% of them had mild to moderate depression, and 24.4% had severe depression. The following variables were significantly associated with depression; increasing age, female gender,non-married,living alone, exposure to death events among relatives, cardiac disease, renal disease, history of abortion among females, and consuming nifidipine and benzodiazepines. As regarding severe depression the significant associated factors was illiteracy, loosing close relative, chronic disease. While high socio-economic status is considered protective. All subjects who attempted suicide scored severe depression.
