Abstract

Aim of the work
1- Study the value of endoscopy of the maxillary sinus (antroscopy) in the diagnosis of the inflammatory diseases of the maxillary sinus.
2- Study the reliability of radiological examination in the diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis in comparison with that obtained by antroscopy.
Conclusion
1- Cases with radiological pictures of moderate opacity and complete opacity.
2- Cases with nuclear radiological findings but have clinical manifestations of maxillary sinusitis.
3- Case of allergic rhino-sinusal disease.
4- All cases of polypous rhinopathy.
5- All cases with pathologic appearance of the middle meatus; in the form of edema, congestion and/ or discharge as diagnosed endoscopically.
There are no actual contraindications to antroscopy and with formal training of the examiner, in order to minimize methodical and interpretational errors; it can be carried out effectively within few minutes in the out patient clinic under local anesthesia. The examination is no more difficult under local anesthesia “with or without premeditations” than an ordinary antral puncture, and only slightly more unpleasant to the patients.
The study confirms the value of antroscopy in the diagnosis of maxillary sinus inflammatory conditions and stresses its superiority over the other diagnostic measures.
Antroscopy is recommended added to the diagnostic procedures of maxillary sinus diseases.
