Abstract

Xeglecting the interaction between soil and structure
’_–_;ies the problem and leads to unrealistic results, there is a need to develop numerical procedures in which
superstructure, the foundation and the supporting medium
=seated as one complete structure.
---is paper presents a three-dimensional finite element as a contribution to fulfill this need.
Computer program prepared to achieve this aim, contains -facilities to analyse plane and space frames of portal
:z1hape, supported on isolated footings and resting on a ,_t:mogeneous isotropic elastic semi-infinite medium. Also, –i :.s capable of analysing multi-story multi-bay space frame supported on raft foundation or isolated footings.
Comparisons were made between solutions, in which the supports of the superstructure were restrained against Ief ormations. These comparisons confirmed that the :nteraction between soil and structure must be taKen into consideration, otherwise the results will be far from true. Also, the study demonstrated that as the rigidity of soil *ncreases, the value of bending moments and columns loads -educed in the superstructure, approach those in case of unyielding supports.
The effect of interaction between footings in case of portal space frame, on the performance of structure was demonstrated. Also, differential settlement of the studied structures was investigated, and the results were compared with those presented by Majid and Gunnell (1976).
