Abstract

This study was carried out to survey the pathologic lesions affecting the mammary glands of the slaughtered animals at Alexandria province. Therefore, specimens from udders of 1200 animals including 780 cows, 262 buffalo-cows, 97 ewes and 61 does were collected. The microscopic examination revealed that 680 cases were affected with an incidence of 56.67%. These affected cases consisted of 490 cows (40.83%), 122 buffalo-cows (10.17%), 48 ewes (4.00%) and 20 does (1.67%). The encountered lesions were of inflammatory and neoplastic origin with the prevalence of the former (92.20% of total affected cases and 7.80% for the neoplastic lesions). The predominant lesion was serous mastitis with an incidence of 43.82% followed by chronic mastitis (36.18%). Granulomatous and suppurative mastitis and papillomas were the 3rd, 4th and 5th in frequency with an incidence of 6.03, 4.85 and 4.56%, respectively. Moreover, papilloma which was the
5th lesion in frequency represented the predominant among the neoplastic lesions. Other lesions were seen but in low incidences.
Macroscopically, the acutely inflamed gland (serous mastitis) was swollen and turgid while the chronically affected ones were small and firm. Th neoplastic lesions were in the form of nodular structure on the skin covering the gland as papilloma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma or embedded in the glandular parenchyma as myxoma and soft fibroma.
