Abstract

B. hominis, once thought to be yeast, has recently been classified as a protozoon. Several studies and case reports seem to indicate that B. homonos is an intestinal pathogen in humans, yet, the pathogenesis is still unclear. The detection of B. hominis in humans is based mainly on microscopic examination of stool specimens by the direct wet mount, and the permanent stained smears. The main problem with these procedures is that many infections may pass unnoticed or unrecognized, due to the marked variation in size and the different morphological forms, which are characteristics of B. hominis.
The objective of the present study as to evaluate the PCR in comparison to the commonly detection techniques: direct wet mount and the permanent stained smears with two stains, trichrome stain and MZN stain. Also a case control study was conducted to assess the prevalence of B. hominis among patients with different criteria and their controls.
