Abstract

This research study was carried out to provide base-line data on oral health condition and dental treatment needs of primary school pupils of both sexes in Alexandria. Dental health problems of these pupils were identified and their dental treatment needs were determined and the professiona~ hours and dentists required to meet these needs were calculated. A stratified random s~mple of 1000 pupils were selected purposely from the fourth grade children attend ing schools in East, Middte and West Zones of Alexandria representing ages 8-11 years, both sexes and different socio-economic levels. Standard criteria and recording methods were used following the WHO Oral Health Surveys - Basic Methods, 1977 with some modifications. The study has yielded the following results : 1. Dental caries is the major dental problem among the / primary school pupils aged 8-11 years in Alexandria. 72.7 of the examined pupils had caries in deciduous teeth with a mean 2.78 decayed teeth per pupil.
