Abstract

This thesis includes three chapters, the first of which is introduction, chapter two includes the experimental details and chapter three includes the results and discussion. The aim of the work in this thesis is to produce a high quality insulating oils which are intended for use in electrical equipements (transformers, capacitors, switchgear and cables) from local paraffinic base-stocks. Thus, the chemical, physical and electrical properties of different local paraffinic base-stocks (70N, 100N, 140N, 150N, and 250N) were first evaluated. The results indicated that neutral base-oil 70N is the most suitable base oil to produce transformer oil via sulphonation or hydrogenation processes. The neutral base oil 70N was sulphonated by using different sulphonating agents e.g dry SOs gas, fuming sulphuric acid (oleum) and concentrated sulphuric acid 96% at different concentrations (3,6,9 and 12% wt). The sulphonation was carried out at different temperatures (15, 25, 35, 45 and 55°C) and at different sulphonation times (30, 60, 90 and 120 min). Effects of acid concentration, temperature and
time on physical, chemical and electrical properties of the sulphonated base oil

were also studied. The neutral base-oil 70N was hydrogenated using different hydrogenation temperatures (250, 275, 300, 325, 350, 375 and 400°C), at different pressures (80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130 and 140 Psi) at different times (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min) and in presence of different catalysts nickel/molybdenum (Ni/Mo) or cobalt/molybdenum (Co/Mo).
Optimum sulphonation conditions were achieved by using acid concentration 6% wt for SOs gas or fuming sulphuric acid (oleum) and 9% wt for concentrated sulphuric acid (96%) at 35°C and for a reaction time of 60 min.
