Abstract Egypt is an arid land with virtually 96.4% of its territory uninhabited parts. The Nile valley and the delta area represent less than 3.6% of Egyptian land; with more than 60 million people inhabit this area. The expectations indicate that the size of Egyptian population will duplicate in the next 25 years. Simultaneously, the overall growth of population and rural-urban migration flow in Egypt has resulted in a tremendous growth of main cities. A growing human population is making demands on the coastal zone for living space, leisure and recreation, and a host of other purposes. The Environmental Action Plan of Egypt calls for conservation and safe utilization of the natural resources of the country. Remote areas away from the Nile valley and the Delta, where the environment is particularly fragile, require special considerations and measures for optimum development. One of these areas is the northwestern coastal zone along the Mediterranean Sea. The study area embraces 80 km of the Mediterranean coastline. The area covered extends from Fuka in the east to Matrouh city in the west. Actually, the study area could be made highly attractive for tourism development and with its investment in agriculture and grazing. Therefore, the study examines the potential opportunities and limiting factors influences on participatory development. Actually, the study identifies and examines the issues that are considered of great importance in the study area. Furthermore the study represents current role of actors and the suggestion of the study to enable all key actors in the public, private and community sectors to play an effective role at the national, state/provincial, metropolitan and local levels in land development. On the other hand the study creates GIS database of the study area. |
