Abstract

Sewage is considered the most dangerous and the main source of pollution of natural waters, as most of coastal t~ns discharge their sewage raw into the sea because this method is the most economic and essist method of disposal. The problem of massive microbial, viral and. parasitic pollu­tion which beyond the natural means of self purification, consti tute a heal th ha zEu’d of the numerous pa thogenic bacteria that may pollut e the sea. This study was carried out with the aim to try to. find out the relationship between swimming in sea water ccmtaminated wi th sewage and the occurrence of pyod.ermas and external ear infection among Alexandria popula tion. The work extended. from the first of May to the end of October 1976 J-n Alex2l1dria. where all the cases of pyoderma and otitis externa 8rriving at the selected outpatient clinics are taken. Ca.ses of pyoderma were taken from the derma tology clinics of Bakess, El Kab bsry, Moharem Bey, t:inna El Bassal, Ras El Teen and Alexandria university hospital. ~ regards the otitis externa, the patients were taken from the ENT Clinics of Alexandria uni versi ty hospital and. ;Carmouz. For every cese of pyoderma and. otitis externa a control was selected from the patients attending ~e same clinics on the same day with the same age and sex fo:c other diseases not :;::’elated to se,a bathing. The study was carried out on 1246 patients, 554 cases with pyoderma, 2nd 521 controls 21so 90 cases wi th otitis externa and 81 controls. The data were collected through a questionnaire inter­ view wi th the; pa tient andlor his companion. In addition full clinical examination and history of sea bathing if ~esent and the date of last time of sea bsthing,also the name of the beach. This study revealed the following main results: 1- For pyodermic cases males constituted more than half of the patients(5J.9) while (46.1) were females. The same was observed in oti-cis externa vrhich was mOl~e common among males (60.0) than females (40.0). 2- The modal age group in case of pyodermas was (2-5) years for males (20.3 of cases) and fo~ females (26.0)of cases) in the age group below two years.
