A great concern during any surgery on the brain is how we can best preserve the person’s level of functioning. This is especially important when an abnormality such as a brain tumour or epileptic focus lies close to an area of the brain that control vital functions such as speech, movement as resection in these areas can lead to loss of motor and speech functions as a result of surgery.
Awake craniotomy procedure means that the patient is awake during critical portions of the surgery (i.e. during resection of the tumor or epileptic focus) so that his vital functions such as speech and movement can be identified and monitored properly via some neurophysiological monitoring techniques which usually need Patient cooperation to avoid damage of these vital areas during resection.
In this essay, the different neurophysiological monitoring techniques have been discussed including: electroencephalography, evoked potentials, electromyography, Intracranial pressure monitoring, cerebral blood flow and cerebral oxygenation monitoring.
