Abstract

The main purpose of a breakwater is to reduce the waves in the harbor area, and to obtain acceptable mooring and maneuvering conditions for ships. Another function of the breakwater is to protect the beaches from erosion.
Breakwater construction cost is very expensive. Also the maintenance cost along its lifetime may reach its initial cost. For these reasons, the world compute in using mounds to construct the breakwaters. This tFend is useful in minimizing both construction and maintenance cost due to the durability of the natural stones.
This thesis aims to optimize the cross section of the rubble mound breakwater by using the modified formulas of van der Meer. Those formulas describe the real parameters of the sea state better than any other formulas.

The work includes a designed program using Matlab coding to calculate all the possible sections that satisfy the hydraulic and structural criterion, then electing the sections that satisfy the minimum volume, minimum cost, minimum quarry waste, and finally minimum maintenance cost. The program also produces a traditional section using Hudson equation. The equations of van der Meer proved to be more economically.
