Abstract

The quality of the supplied energy has been a concern in recent \ears for electric po\\er utilities o satisfy the increasing sensitivity of not onl\ the industrial and commercial, but also the esidential users. This concern is due to man\ factors including increasing sensitivity of the evices utilized by customers and their awareness of the impacts of small variations of the quality f the electricity supply. Consequently, the increase in concern for power quality has resulted in ignificant advances in monitoring equipment to be able to measure, define, and characterize isturbances and power quality phenomena. Analysis tools have also been developed to process le enormous amount of the measured rau data uhere appropriate tools for defining and ssessing power quality phenomena enable the utilities to reinforce the supply system so that a ;tter design and utilization of mitigation devices can be dealt with more efficiently.
his thesis presents the efforts and the results of developing a new software codes and ethodologies aimed to provide more flexible and efficient ways for assessing and improving the jality of power supply. The purpose of the introduced system is a construction of an automated meralized scheme that can be used for real time detection and identification of different types of >wer quality disturbances that produce sudden changes in the power quality levels. Moreover, a :w mitigation technique and practical recommendations to enhance the performance of the iwer supply are suggested for implementation.
To achieve the goal, a programmable electronic circuit is designed and suggested for electrical wer quality assessment and improvement. The designed electronic circuit depends mainly on ; construction of a hardware - software scheme in order for the distorted signals, supposed to monitored at supply systems, to be automatically collected, transferred, and processed for ther investigation and analysis processes.
the hardware system consists mainly of two parts. Power Quality Disturbance Generator )DG) and a hardware device for data transfer (Data Acquisition Board - CIO-DAS08/JR-AO). e designed Power Quality Disturbance Generator has the ability to generate real distorted veforms related to the most common disturbance events supposed to be presented in the tribution networks such as harmonics, sags, swells, and complete interruptions. Such a device jsed to test the performance and the credibility of the linked software system for detecting and ilyzing the pre-defined distorted waveform. The other part of the hardware system, the data
