Abstract

The Arab Gelatin and Pharmaceutical Products Company is one of the most leading companies in the Middle East and Africa for manufacturing hard and soft capsules of many pharmaceutical products . During encapsulation process the two gelatin ribbons are sealed together by heat and under pressure to gi •e the resultant capsules. The off -cut from the ribbon remains, is the solid, waste generated which constitutes about 1/3 of the gelatin initially used, the company under investigation releases about 50.0 kg / day, every 1.0 kg waste contains about its half weigh protein, i.e., about 25.0 kg / day protein go to the solid waste. About 7.5 tons / year is deposed in addition to. that wasted from other Egyptian companies for the same product of soft gelatin capsules, that becomes about 78.75 tons of wasted protein generated every year. According to law 4/1994, capsules off-cut is the waste that generated during processing pharmaceutical products. It must be properly managed otherwise, it could produces many environmental and health problems. The best ways to reduce the amount of waste that must be disposed of is to increase its reuse and its recovery rate. The advantages of using recyclable materials means that there is reduced use virgin material’ with consequent environmental benefits in terms of energy saving in production process, reduced emission to air, water and on land. Environmental management hierarchy gives recycling and reuses the second priority. Therefore, reuse of gelatin off-cut and getting rid of this waste is a new safe trend without public health or environmental problems. Livestock production is one of the most important factors in most developing countries especially Arab countries, which could play an important role in the economy of these countries and their food security. In Egypt, supplying farm animals with sufficient quantity of essential nutrient to satisfy their requirements is practically one of the most important problems, which confronts the animal production. In-turn concerned a real loss in animal productive performance and lead to an increase in the feeding cost which is the most significant expensive item in animal production and could reach 60-70% of the total cost for example of rabbit production. Therefore, any effort being made to reduce it will increase the net revenue to the producer. Moreover the competition between human and livestock for concentrates is quit visible, the problem is really acute. Producing white meat at a large scale is adopted in Egypt to increase animal protein per capita. Rabbits are one of the alternatives to achieve this goal for their prolificacy There are three ways to solve the problem of food deficiency: increase the production of grains, enhance the efficiency of feed utilization, and develop new feed resources. The first solution will be difficult to implement but the second and the third are reasonably practical. Accordingly, a non-conventional’ cheap material must be partially or completely used in animal diets, protein supplements are the most expensive ingredients in these diets. There have been efforts to use the non-traditional feed sources ranging from crop, animal by-products to compost or even microbiologically enriched materials. Soya bean meal is the main protein source in poultry and rabbit diets.
