Abstract

At no time in the recorded history of Alexandria has the Built Environment undergone changes as radical as those that have occurred during the past century. the city exhibits a tremendously fascinating range of different architectural vocabularies, which make us even more conscious of the serious crisis we are facing today. Neither following the universal movements in arts, nor expressing their own identity in an authentic vocabulary, architects, for the most, without character and impossible to Classify. A study of the past however has proved are producing hybrid works, that this has not been always the case in Alexandria. On the contrary, our architectural heritage displays the ability of foreign and Egyptian architects to update their buildings with the latest trends and integrate them, in the environment. Tracing the different forces that have had a decisive hand in shaping the Architecture of our city is a task of great complexity since pluralism of cultures were expressed in so different vocabularies and forces are very much interrelated. since the subject deals with the impact of the local context on the Built Environment, as well as the influence of the artistic and architectural trends of the 20th century: the following chapters form the structure of the research, Chapter I; The impact of the political and socio-economic context on the Built Environment This chapter gives an overview of the political events and social changes that the city has undergone since the beginning of the 20th century until the present day. it was necessary to study each historical period separately to understand how deep was the economic and cultural impact on the shaping of the city and on the emergence of different architectural trends, Therefore, the chapter is divided into six periods: each period is preceded by a brief chronology of the most important dates and ends with. The impact of the context on the Built-environment of the city, reviewing the urban projects that were undertaken.
