Abstract

‎ABSTRACT
‎Increasing the bearing capacity of soils is one of the most important human targets starting trom Pharos through Romans until the time being. Man used many ways and tools to fulfill this target till he succeeded in inventing geosynthetics and using them as soil reinforcement to increase the bearing capacity.
‎Geosynthetics proved to be an excellent solution for many soil problems. They can be used as reinforcements, separators, isolators, and in many other roles. The existing problem is that there are no rules or data for the design of geosynthetics till today. Man is using them by experience which might cause many problems. Another problem lies in the developing countries as that; the use of geosynthetics is not spreading because of the lack of confidence in this product, lack of previous use of geosynthetics in construction, lack of experience and relatively high prices as they are imported, tfough they might be cheaper than many other techniques.
‎Contributing to solving the previous problems concerning geosynthetics, the work in this thesis is developed to answer many questions related to one type of geosynthetics, which is geotextile.
‎The work in this thesis tries to define the effective domain around the footing which is affected by inducing geotextile into soil. The effects of geotextile inclusion on the response of homogenous and stratified soil were investigated. The effects of inclusion of more than one layer of geotextile, and the most effective embedment ratio (d/B) of inclusion were investigated. The effect of geotextile on the response of single footings and closely spaced footings under vertical concentric loads was studied.
‎Several interesting topics concerning geotextile are studied and investigated in the thesis, which we hope that the results and conclusions achieved might be of any benefit in the geotechnical field.
