Abstract Arches have been known for thousands years. Pharaohs in ancient Egypt used them widely in their temples. The wide spread of such type of structures is due to its beautiful architectural appearance, its economy and its inherent capacity in resisting loads due to its form. Making the arch as a funicular curve as possible by considering practical requirements, will result in minimizing the straining actions acting on the arch and thus getting its maximum structural advantages. The shape of the arch may adopt one of the following two geometries 1- One continuous curve such as circular, parabolic, or catenary arches. 2- A combination of any two curves. The investigation in the present study will be limited to the first type only Arches may be stiffened by means of a truss, this structural combination is so called” TRUSSED ARCH The main profits gained from the trussed arches are:-. |
