Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to develop a fixed grid finite volume numerical approach to simulate the physical details of convection dominated melting and solidification processes for a rectangular enclosure cavity. This approach is based on the enthalpy-porosity method which is used to track the motion of liquid-solid front and to obtain the temperature and velocity profiles in the liquid phase. The method is utilized for ranges of Raleigh, Prandtl numbers.
Nusselt number is also calculated for different conditions. The thesis consists of four chapters; chapter one reviews the different models that had been used to represent the solid-liquid interface during solidification or melting process in a rectangular enclosure cavity, casting, crystal growth.
The models are classified into two categories, namely enthalpy method (fixed grid method) and adaptive grid generation method.
Chapter two concerns generally with the phase change problem and the different methods of solution. Chapter three is specially contains the enthalpy-porosity method which is
used next to solve the energy equation. It introduces the model of governing equations that has been used to represent the melting process. It contains
also the numerical method that has been employed to solve the governing equations. Chapter four shows the results and conclusions supported with figures that
show how different parameters change with time following the melting process and the effect of Ra and Pr numbers in the melting process.
