Abstract

Cholangiocarcinoma is a malignant tumour that arises from the biliary tree (intrahepatic, extrahepatic). It is a rare malignancy. It is mainly adenocarcinoma and rare to be squamous cell carcinoma. The patient’s complaint is mainly obstructive jaundice which includes clay stool, dark urine and weight loss. The diagnosis of this malignancy includes laboratory investigations or imaging investigations. The recent diagnostic modalities as positron emission tomography (PET) and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) can help in early diagnosis and consequently early treatment of the small tumours. Resection and irradiation used to be the main way of treatment. Liver transplantation and photodynamic therapy are the most recent modalities of treatment. They improve the survival rate of cholangiocarcinoma.
