Abstract

Advances in surgical techniques and immunosuppression therapy have improved the survival and quality of life in organ transplant recipients. Thus transplant recipient women at their reproductive age have been also increasing. The numbers of pregnancies after organ transplantation especially after kidney transplantation are increasing and many case reports, centers reports and transplantation registries reports are published every now and then describing satisfactory pregnancy outcomes in this group of patients. So women of childbearing age who have had renal transplantation should be counseled before conception about possibilities and risks of pregnancy (to the mother, fetus and the graft), if pregnancy is unwanted reliable contraceptive method should be used. But if pregnancy is wished counseling must start before conception, and it should be managed as a high risk pregnancy by a team including mainly an obstetrician experienced in caring for pregnant women with kidney dysfunction, a transplant nephrologist and pediatrician.
