Abstract

Anemia during pregnancy is a universal public health problem all over the world. The prevalence of anemia in the developed countries is 18 and in the developing countries is 50-60 during pregnancy. Attendance of pregnant women to MCH centers is early during pregnancy in the developed countries and late in the developing countries. The most common form is iron deficiency anemia. Strategies for combating iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy are iron supplementation, dietary modification, control of viral, bacterial and parasitic infections, and food fortification with iron. The data collected in the study spot light on the factors that lead to anemia during pregnancy, extent of anemia and iron supplementation through MCH centers. The sample size is 300 pregnant women attending MCH centers selected by systematic random sample from 6 MCH centers representing the seven Medical districts of Alexandria city.
