Abstract

In order to improve the performance of screw compressors, it is important to know, understand and analysis the effect of different geometrical as well as operating parameters on the compressor performance. Consequently, the present study is concerned with obtaining the characteristics of twin-screw compressor by using a simulation code named SCORPATH. Detailed explanation of the code is presented and discussed and followed by sets of flow diagrams showing how the code works. The validity of the code is tested by comparing its results at full load operation with a set of experimental results. This comparison was good which gives confidence in the used code. A further step in the present study was obtaining the compressor performance under partload using different methods for capacity control. A comparison between these methods revealed that speed control method is the best one. Finally a parametric study was performed to determine the effect of the geometrical as well as the operating parameters on the performance of the screw compressor. This study revealed that the geometrical parameters; clearance gap, number of lobes in the rotors, rotor relative length as well as screw wrap angle have significant effect on the perfromance of the screw compressor. In addition built in volume ratio, tip speed .suction and discharge pressures, all these operating parameters have also a great effect on the performance of the compressor.
