Abstract Previous research showed that increased communication among different research groups in the same organization leads to better research performance. This research argues that the layout of the architectural plan is instrumental in promoting or hindering social interaction among inhabitants of a research cen tre which has an effect on the progress of science. It also argues that the presence or absence of meeting facilities like cafes, meeting rooms and break out spaces aid or hinder social interaction respectively. Managerial decisions also playa sensitive role in the process. It is argued that symmetrical parts of plans that are not properly linked dramatically reduce mean integration and thus communication among users of the floor plan and consequently hinder the process of interaction and thus have a negative effect on the progress of science in research centres. On the other hand properly linked mirrored plans can improve mean integration and consequently communication in the whole plan and thus the progress of science in research centres . |
