Abstract SUMMARY Tfie effectiveness of treatment regimes used in breast cancer Is limited by occult metastases at the time of initial therapy, therefore methods of disclosing them are required. Physical methods, as nodal histology in radical mastectomy specimens and skeletal sclntigraphy are used. The increasing precision and convenience of modern bio¬chemical techniques have led to the identification of several substances in blood, ufine and other body fluids of cancer patients. It was found that these substances have more clinical values as indicators of tumor progress than the physical methods. These substances are called markers”. Acute phase proteins (APPs) are a group of plasma proteins that show elevations in concentration, non spec-ifically, in response to stimuli from injury. Infection, irnmunol ogical reactions and infl ammatory processes* In these diverse processes, phagocytic cells produce a ii ii mediator molecule Called interleukin-1 that enters the circulation and affects distant organ systems. It stimulates the liver cells to produce APPs, It has been shown that mgl ignant tumors are associated with APPs elevations. The aim of this study is assessment of the contribution of Measurement of APPs levels to the management of patients |
