Abstract

Students living in university hostels are a distinct group of university students who have unique needs and problems. They have particular physical, social, and emotional characteristics. They are away from home for the first time and have to learn to manage their own affairs, and adjust to new conditions of living without a family member of higher experience to guide them. Also students who live independently are subject to less control of parental authorities that inhibit unhealthy behavior. They are more prone to poor eating habits, lack of sleep, or the development of new smokers, or drug users. All these factors do not contribute positively to the development of a healthy lifestyle. The present work was designed to assess the health related lifestyles and its determinants among students living in Alexandria University hostels through the following; I-Identification of some health related lifestyles among students such as: smoking, drug abuse, performance of physical exercise and dietary habits 2- Determination of the psychosocial environment of students in terms of hobbies, friendship, financial support, living conditions and loneliness. 3-Identification of certain daily life problems such as; educational problems, nutritional problems, environmental problems and transportation problems. 4-Assessment of the perceived health status of students. To fulfill this aim, the study was conducted on a sample of 600 male and female university students from different colleges, and of different educational grades living at Alexandria University hostels. This sample was selected from the hostels via multi stages sampling techniques, the first stage was proportionate allocation method of sampling from the main hostels and some of rented hoteds. The second stage was allocation of the number by specialty in terms of practical and theoretical. In the third stage, the sample in each speciality was allocated to represent proportionately most of the faculty names. In the last stage, all educational grades were proportionately allocated. A predesigned self-reported questionnaire was developed, and completed by the students in 20-30 minutes and returned to obtain data of the following; I-personal and sociodemographic characteristics of the students, as well as family history of non-communicable diseases, and parental lifestyle. 2-Daily life problems in Alexandria University hostels in terms of; social, environmental, medical, nutritional, educational and transportation problems. 3-Perceived health status, and perceived symptoms during the preceding six months using a sum index of the frequency of feeling eight symptoms. 4- Social support of the students through an Arabic version of Duke-UNC Functional Social Support Questionnaire (DUFFS). 5-Health-related lifestyle among students in the hostels, in terms of; dietary behavior, oral hygiene, body image and attempted weight control measures, performance of physical activity, sedentary lifestyle, tobacco and drug use, leisure activity, and sleeping behavior. Further, it assesses the relationship between the subjects; determined level, beliefs about health-risk behavior, desire to modify and previous trial to change such behaviors were investigated, also possible barriers to adopting healthier lifestyle were identified. 6. Satisfaction of students of their residence at university hostels, and different problems they face there. Anthropometric measurements to assess the actual body weight status as well as measurement of blood pressure also were performed. All measurements were compared with the international ones 0 estimate the prevalence of overweight, and high blood pressure. The results of the present study can be summarized asfollows: The sample included 600 University students of whom 263 (43.8) were males and 337 (56.2) were females. The results revealed that the age ranged from 18 to 25 years. Overall, the mean age of the males was (20.2 years :i:2.03), while that of femlaes was (19.8 years:l:1.8).
