Abstract The main objective of the present work is to study the problem of erosion at beaches due to the effect of waves and littoral currents along a coast and to present a model for the design of detached breakwaters to protect the eroded beach. Also the effect of detached breakwaters on the shape of the shoreline is studied. The detached breakwater system constructed at Baltim is considered as a test model. . The first phase of Baltim project consists of four rubble mound segments and was implemented during the period from July 1991 to June 1993. Three additional segments were constructed as phase two , which started in June 1995 and was finished in November 1998 . At present , phase three is under construction where additional three segments are to be implements Field measurements have been intensified at Baltim area since July 1991 by increasing the number of local profiles , measuring littoral currents around breakwaters ,collecting data of the current patterns, and the incident and the diffracted wave heights inside the shadow area of breakwater. . Measured field data at baltim detached breakwaters , Ras – El- Bar cities , as well as other published data for detached breakwaters from different sites around the world are analyzed to formulate a new model for the design of detached breakwaters . The application of the model allows the design of the breakwater and predicts the shoreline response at the updrift, downdrift and in front of the gap of the breakwater.. The model is applied to check the design of phase three of Baltim project. Recommendations regarding the deign of detached breakwaters are given. The importance of starting the construction of the breakwater from the downdrifit side towards the updrifit side is emphasized . |
