Abstract As old as history; man knew go iter. Goiter is an early sign of iodine deficiency (1 D). The 1 D problem is now designated as iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). The term IDD covers a wide variety of clinical conditions affecting the health and well being of man; starting in early fetal life and continuing through adulthood. This study was conducted in Cairo Governorate from October 1990 to March 1991 on 1648 primary school children (843 males and 805 females), randomly selected from 9 public schools located in five different zones of Cairo. The study aimed to assess the current status of 1 DD in Cairo using go iter prevalence rate and urinary iodine excretion as indicators. It also aimed to detect the factors that might be implicated in goitrogenesis. . All children were examined clinically for go iter using the WHO classification. All cases and controls were subjected to detailed study characteristics. of their socioeconomic and anthropometric A subsample was subjected to dietary study and urinary iodine determination. The dietary s~udy included 24 hours recall and frequency questionnaire to assess the intake of iodine containing and possibly goitrogenic foods. Samples from local drinking water and some commonly consumed foods were analyzed for their iodine content using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
