Abstract
Theoretical analyses to determine stresses in flexible
pavements from the principles of engineering mechanics were
begun by Bouissines.’4in 1885. He assumed- homogenous t elastic
material (obeys Hook’s law), and the pavement and the underlying
80il is a single layered isotropic material.
In 1948, D.M. Burmister, E.S.Barber, and others (Oglesby
& Hewes. 1966):t: modified and extended thls analysis to 1nclul e
nOnisotropic materials and multilayer systems and to reconcile
theoretical and observed results • Burmister solved the problem
of flexible pavement compo aed of two layers • Stress and
deflection values as obtained by Burmister are dependent upon
the strength ratio of the layers El/E2t where El and E2 are
the modulii of elasticity of the reinforcingmd eubgrade
layers, respectively.
